If you only sign or send a few documents a month, a free plan may be enough. Here is what three well-known vendors publish about free access.
What each vendor offers
- SignWell: 3 documents per month, 1 sender. Its free plan lists audit trail, template links, bulk send, custom branding, in-person signing and API access.
- Dropbox Sign: A free plan is offered; its limits are not stated on the pricing page. The pricing page mentions a 30-day free trial of paid features.
- DocuSign: No free plan found on the page we checked. Its cheapest published plan is Personal at $10 per month billed annually, with 5 envelopes per month.
When a free plan stops being enough
- You send more documents than the monthly cap. SignWell's free plan stops at 3 documents per month; its Light plan is $10 per month billed annually with unlimited documents.
- Several people need to send documents. SignWell's free plan has 1 sender.
- You need features reserved for paid tiers, such as SMS delivery on SignWell Business or single sign-on on Dropbox Sign Standard.
Check before you rely on it
Free plan limits change. Confirm the current cap and features on the vendor's page, and keep a copy of important signed documents outside the tool.
